"Teenagers' maths skills are no better than 30 years ago despite soaring GCSE passes, a major study has found. Rising scores owe more to grade inflation and 'teaching to the test' than real gains in mathematical understanding, it suggests."

"Teachers are concentrating on giving the basic skills to more pupils, so the average ability goes up, but they fail to stretch the brightest, so the high-end ability falls" säger Michael Shayer, professor of applied psychology vid King's College.
